Wide-Eyed Tales from Kimora and Russell Simmons' Epic Yard Sale

The lavish New Jersey mansion once home to Kimora Lee Simmons and her ex-husband Russell has been sold. But first they’re having a yard sale! It includes Warhol paintings, $20,000 bronzes, fur coats, and a $200,000 bed.

The divorced hip-hop power couple’s Saddle River, NJ mansion—which has been featured in MTV Cribs and Kimora Lee: Life in the Fast Lane—was sold last month for $13.9 million. (That was down from the original price of $23.8 million.) This weekend, scavengers are invited to pillage the unbelievably luxe 10-bedroom mansion in the New Jersey yard sale to end all yard sales. Among the loot for sale:

  • Warhols paintings
  • “A bed once owned by slain clothing designer Gianni Versace is selling for $200,000. The pillow is $2,000,” according to the AP
  • $100,000 painting by Faith Ringgold
  • Dog carriers by Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana
  • $20,000 brass lions to flank your front door
  • Leopard-print doggie bed
  • Skeleton statue.
  • $7500 Versace chairs.
  • Fur coats, including a pink one.
  • $3 coffee mugs

One seventeen-year-old Kimora fan, who drove in from Pennsylvania, describes the yard sale’s appeal:

She was an original—before The [Real] Housewives of New Jersey. There are wonderful things inside. I saw a pink fur. I was told I had to pay cash. I wish I knew that… I’m most likely coming back.

WHAT A DEAL! A sign advertises the tag sale at the Simmonses' former estate in Saddle River, NJ, yesterday, attracting bargain hunter/fan Gemma Coccioli, who scored a doggie bed and skeleton statue for $20 each.

Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons are throwing the most Def garage sale in history.

The hip-hop mogul and his reality-TV star ex-wife opened up their recently sold New Jersey mansion yesterday for a massive, everything-must-go sale.

The offerings included everything from a $200,000 designer bed to a $20 doggie bed.

Signs posted throughout the home warned visitors, “If you break it, you bought it.”

Shoppers’ jaws dropped when they spotted items such as a $12,000 pool table, a $12,000 Persian rug, a $20,000 pair of brass lion statues and two couches from the South Beach home of the late Gianni Versace that went for $7,500 each.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Gemma Coccioli, who dropped $20 each for a doggie bed with leopard-print cushion and a skeleton statue.

“How cool for me to tell people that Kimora owned this.”

Russell Simmons, co-founder of Def Jam records and the Phat Farm clothing line, and Kimora, creative director of the Baby Phat fashion line, divorced last year. Last month, they sold their stately Saddle River home for $13.9 million.

Although the house on Fox Hedge Road has become famous as the backdrop of Kimora’s Style Network show, “Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane,” it fetched only a fraction of its original asking price of $23.8 million.

Yesterday, Kimora — who is now dating the actor Djimon Honsou and will be moving to LA — was spotted on the grounds with a video crew filming the sell-off for a episode of her show that a source said will air in November.

At one point, Kimora scratched her butt, then apologized to the crowd of onlookers, “Sorry you all saw me do that.”

The sale is expected to continue from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and tomorrow. Visitors are allowed to enter parts of the home to peruse items laid out on tables.

One of yesterday’s visitors, Doug Jacobs, got a bit of sticker shock.

“It’s weird that we can own some of their belongings if we wanted it, but it’s a small fortune,” he said.

The sale was executed by A1 Liquidators.

The priciest items were a $200,000 bed, which was among several items once owned by Versace, and a $100,000 acrylic painting called “The Dinner Quilt” by Faith Ringgold.

Have A Sexy Picnic for Two via [cosmo]

This time of year just begs for casual outdoor dining, where you can
relax, get cozy, eat with your fingers, and, if you’re feeling sappy,
feed each other little bites.

By Katie Lee

greek food

There’s something so intimate about a picnic with your guy. And as
the temperature begins to rise, eating outside becomes refreshing and
romantic. But no boring ham-and-cheese sandwiches or store-bought potato
salad here! Entice him with an exotic Middle East-themed menu of foods
rich in bold flavors. Pack a colorful blanket or tapestry and a few
pillows for lounging. Find a pretty spot to settle down or, if the
weather doesn’t cooperate, spread out on the floor of your apartment.
Between the aromas and tastes, you’ll be transported.

Meze Platter with Herbed Pita Crisps

Meze is traditional in Greece and Turkey and is the equivalent of
tapas or finger food. Make these homemade pita crisps, and buy the rest
in the deli at your grocery store. A drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil
and a squeeze of lemon juice brighten up all the flavors.

2 T unsalted butter, room temperature
1 T minced fresh herbs
(parsley, rosemary, thyme, etc.)
2 pitas, split in half, and each
half cut into fourths (use whole wheat for a healthy alternative)

Salt
Hummus
Baba ghanoush (eggplant dip)
Dolmades (stuffed
grape leaves)
Greek olives
Tabbouleh salad
Feta cheese

Lemon wedges
Extra-virgin olive oil

For the pita crisps: Preheat oven to 400°F. Use a
fork to mix butter and herbs in a bowl, then spread onto the pita
slices. Sprinkle with salt, and bake until crisp, about 10 minutes.

For the meze platter: Arrange hummus, baba ghanoush,
dolmades, olives, tabbouleh, feta, and lemon on a platter. Drizzle
with extra-virgin olive oil, and serve with the pita crisps.

Moroccan Mint Tea

On my trip to Israel this past summer, we drank a refreshing mint tea
at the end of every meal. Store tea in a thermos, and pack it in your
picnic basket. I like to serve this tea in decorative Moroccan glasses.
Bonus: After drinking, your breath will be fresh and you’ll be ready
to smooch!

3 c. water
1 green-tea bag
1 c. fresh mint leaves
4 T
sugar

Boil water. Place tea bag, mint leaves, and sugar in a teapot. Add
water, and stir. Let steep for 5 minutes. Strain and serve.

Couscous Salad with Shrimp

Couscous is a staple throughout the Middle East. The traditional
stuff takes some time to prepare, but quick-cooking couscous, like in
this recipe, is still very tasty. Couscous is usually served with a
stew, but I like it as a salad for a lighter alternative that’s easy to
transport.

1 6-oz. box herb-flavored couscous
10 medium shrimp, cooked,
tails removed
1/2 c. chopped cucumber
1/2 c. sliced grape
tomatoes
2 T chopped Italian flat-leaf parsley
3 T extra-virgin
olive oil
1 T freshly squeezed lemon juice

Prepare couscous according to the package instructions. Let cool. In a
large bowl, combine the couscous with shrimp, cucumbers, tomatoes, and
parsley. Drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice, and toss to combine.
Chill until serving time.

For dessert: Bring dried fruit — like apricots,
dates, prunes, and figs — to enjoy with your tea.

Perfect for a picnic: I love the chic Sofia Mini
Blanc de Blancs — small cans of sparkling wine inspired by Sofia
Coppola. (sofiamini.com)

Around the Town in A Day With Miami’s Most Vivacious Socialite, Barbara Becker

On the Town with Barbara Becker

For the German-born socialite, actress and model, a day isn’t complete without caviar, wallpaper, Warhols and barbecue ribs.

BY Bill Kearney

Clockwise from top left: Becker (left) shows Sam Robin her latest collection of wallpaper; With Sandee Saunders at Caviar Kaspia; With Saunders at The Webster; With Dorothy Blau in front of Blau’s portrait by Andy Warhol; Chef David Whyko heads the table at Delishe; From left, Saunders, Author Lynn Gallow, Maryel Epps, Becker and Robin at Delishe

2:30 PMBarbara runs around the toy-strewn front yard of her Venetian Causeway colonial in bare feet with the kind of frenetic yet unflappable demeanor of someone who’s used to wrangling children.

https://i1.wp.com/www.gala.de/asset/Image/artikel/talk/2009/kw37/becker-quinze-miami.jpg Barbara with her handsome husband Arne Quinze

She has been back from Russia for 24 hours (there to help artist/designer hubby Arne Quinze scout for an event), the kids are still overseas, and right now we’re off to kibitz with mentor/ interior designer Sam Robin, who was mistaken for Barbara’s mother at her wedding last fall in Germany. Bulldog Rocco and cocker spaniel Diva Baby Girl greet us with Sam, and we’re immediately offered glasses of Blanc de Blancs. Billie Holiday plays on the stereo and the girls discuss Barbara’s latest collection of wallpaper (she’s huge in Germany). Soon the conversation turns to kids and weddings, but they both stop and listen to the music a moment, singing together, “If I should take a notion, to jump into the ocean, ’tain’t nobody’s business if I do.”4:30 PM

We hit friend Dorothy Blau’s Bal Harbour condo. Dorothy was the first to bring Andy Warhol’s art to South Florida, and he gave her her signature haircut. Barbara’s in the market for a Christopher Makos. There’s a triptych portrait of Dorothy that Warhol painted in the dining room, and a Jasper Johnsin the kitchen. Dorothy offers white wine and advice about dealing with the death of loved ones, which is pretty much to celebrate that you even knew them. She and Barbara talk art, how to manage expectations and happiness, and set up a meeting between Dorothy and Arne.

6:30 PM

We rush into The Webster to catch BFF Sandee Saunders. Barbara goes gaga over Sandee’s Krelwear dress (she must have one), and there’s an impromptu runway strut. After a caviar session with chef Todd Adkins at Kaspia and a quick shopping excursion for a new bag, we’re off to a gal-pal dinner party at Delishe.

8 PM

At Delishe, chef David Whyko’s private dining spot on the Upper Eastside, Barbara meets with Kiki Kuhnert, president of Dolphin Aid (Barbara is a spokesperson), photog Iran Issa-Khan, singer Maryel Epps and some other friends for a gourmet soul-food dinner of collard greens, truffled mac and cheese, barbecue baby backs and wings. David’s wife, Author, takes music requests, and before long the girls are up and dancing. When the Temptations’ “My Girl” comes on, they all form a kick line, arm-in-arm, and sing along, but change the lyric to “My Girls.”

Just in time for the holidays, the
fabulous Preston Bailey has released a new book. I had the opportunity
to meet Preston this past April, and he is as charming and wonderful
in person as the events he creates.

Preston
Bailey Celebrations
is a collection of his extraordinary floral
arrangements, set designs, lighting and art installations. Truly it is a
visually spectacular book filled with inspiration and breathtaking
photography.

Simply stunning!

Tell Us Everything, Event Designer Preston Bailey

by Carrie N.
Culpepper

Last week, high-end event
planner Preston Bailey
gathered hundreds in the sprawling 69th
Regiment Armory in Manhattan to celebrate the launch of his fourth book,
“Preston Bailey Celebrations.” The gorgeous book is
filled with images of the lavish events he’s designed the world over
(with rates starting at $250,000), from a stunning Tiffany-glass
inspired wedding in New York to a reception with giant floral animals in
Bali. So you can expect his own party would be a stunner – not to
mention celebrity-tinged.

Bailey created a magical environment
with no shortage of glitz (above). Two giant disco balls dramatically
projected light throughout the room and dreamlike trees glowed at the
entrance. A giant runway ran down the middle of the room, which was
projected with a rotating image of pages from his book, giving it the
illusion of a printing press. The runway served as a stage for
performers such as Martha “Everybody Dance Now” Wash and Gloria Gaynor,
then later was filled with attendees dancing. Bailey was true to his
theory that a diverse crowd makes for the best parties. He was feted by
quite a diverse crowd.

1 cup (150g) plain flour
1 1/2 cups
(375ml) milk
2 tbs caster sugar
2 tsp vanilla bean paste
Melted
butter, to grease
Filling
200g dark chocolate,
coarsely chopped
2/3 cup (160ml) thin cream
1/4 cup (60ml)
freshly brewed espresso
Mocha sauce

1/4 cup (60ml)
freshly brewed espresso

  1. Combine the eggs and flour in a medium bowl. Gradually add milk,
while continually stirring, until well combined and mixture is smooth.
Add sugar and vanilla and stir to combine. Set aside for 30 minutes to

minutes or until chocolate melts and mixture is smooth. Remove from
heat; cover with plastic wrap. Place in the fridge, stirring
occasionally, for 30 minutes or until mixture cools and thickens.
  4. Line a 20cm springform pan with plastic wrap. Place a crêpe in the
pan. Spread with a little fi ling. Continue layering with crêpes and
filling, finishing with a crêpe. Cover with plastic wrap and place in

liqueur and sugar in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering
water. Stir for 5 minutes or until sauce is smooth.
  6. Turn the cake onto a clean surface. Use a sharp knife to cut into
