So far, this image of a translucent “Spirit of Ecstacy” hood ornament is all that Rolls-Royce has revealed of the 102EX experimental car.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Rolls-Royce has always gone hand-in-hand with “green,” just not the environmental kind. But now, earth-conscious millionaires wanting to cruise in luxury may be intrigued by an all-electric Rolls-Royce Phantom to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on March 1st.

So far, there are no plans to produce the 102EX, as it’s called, for consumers. This will be strictly an experimental car, Rolls-Royce said.

The car will be used to research range and performance as well as to gauge public reaction to the whole idea of an electric Rolls-Royce, the automaker said.

“I must be convinced that any alternative drive-train we choose for the future delivers an authentic Rolls-Royce experience,” Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös said in an announcement. The gasoline-powered Rolls-Royce Phantom production car is an extremely large, heavy and expensive automobile. With a base price of $380,000, the standard gasoline-powered Phantom weighs a little over 5,500 pounds — almost as much as a Chevrolet Tahoe full-sized SUV — and is powered by a 453-horsepower 6.8-liter V12 engine. It gets 11 miles per gallon in city driving and about 18 on the highway, according to EPA estimates. Among the Phantom’s available options are a back seat refrigerator with a matched set of crystal tumblers and a crystal decanter. The car also comes with large silver and wood tray tables for the use of back seat passengers and silver-handled umbrellas that are stored in special drying compartments accessible as the back doors are opened. It’s not clear, yet, if the 102EX would have the full compliment of Rolls-Royce luxury accessories. Full details and specifications of the 102EX will be announced on March 1st, Rolls-Royce said. Rolls-Royce is a subsidiary of the German luxury carmaker BMW, which also owns the British compact car brand Mini. Both BMW and Mini have previously launched experimental fleets of electric cars. BMW also announced Monday that it is launching an electric car subsidiary called BMWi. The new subsidiary will launch in 2013 with two vehicles, the BMW i3, a small “city car,” and the BMW i8, a high-performance plug-in hybrid car. Both cars will have bodies made from aluminum and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, BMW said. The automaker also set up a New York-based venture capital fund, BMW i Ventures, with an initial $100 million investment. BMW i Ventures will seek out technology partners for BMW, the automaker said.

Ferrari recalls 1,250 sports cars after some catch fire

AFP

AFP/File – A model poses next to a Ferrari 458 Italia on display at the Beijing Auto Show near the capital’s …

ROME (AFP) – Italian automaker Ferrari announced Wednesday it had recalled all versions of its model 458 Italia sports car produced before July 2010 after four of them caught fire.

“Our dealers are going to call clients and tell them to bring back their cars so that the necessary modifications can be carried out,” a spokesman told AFP. The recall involves 1,248 vehicles worldwide, the official said.

Ferrari last week opened an enquiry after four of its vehicles caught fire spontaneously in California, China, France and Switzerland.

The investigation had shown problems with the mounting, adhesive, heat shields and wheel arch assembly, the spokesman said.

“High outside temperatures and intensive use of the vehicle cause a distortion and the vehicle catches fire,” he said, adding that the modification will include replacing the heat shields.

Ferrari 458 Italia owners are not having a good year.

After reports emerged that 10 of the supercars either caught on fire or were involved in an accident, a video of a supposed 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia catching on fire in China popped up.

If so, this would bring the grand total up to 11 mishaps since the car was unveiled last September.

The video shows the car, red in color with slanted headlights, already engulfed in flames on the side of a road with lush greenery.

The website http://www.wreckedexotics.com first noted that the owners of the Ferrari 458 Italia hit a bad streak and they confirmed that the latest video is in fact the 11th mishap to befall the owners of the $260,000 vehicles.

“It’s the first wreck in China (city of Ningbo),” the website stated on Wednesday, saying it “caught fire after only about 1,000 miles on the odometer.”

Ferrari told the UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph they are taking the accidents and fires seriously, and will conduct separate investigations into each incident. The company says that the cars have no known issues and say each incident is separate.

The Ferrari 458 Italia can go zero to 60 miles per hour in just over three seconds, and can top speeds of just over 200 miles per hour.

Stars and Their Cars

By Josh
Condon
of MSN Autos

Us Weekly magazine might tell you that stars are “just like us.”
But, in reality, they aren’t. We find they tend to drive better cars —
much better cars, ranging from the absurd to the eco-conscious to the
practical-chic. But this is nothing new. The love affair between celebs
and tasty automobiles is well-documented. And while piloting a
million-dollar-plus Ferrari Enzo around town to pick up, say, an iced
caffè mocha at the local Starbucks might seem like overkill to you,
it’s normal to these luminaries. Here we highlight 10 coveted,
cutting-edge or just plain weird rides and the celebs who own them.

Multitasker Pharrel
Williams
— one-half of the producing duo the Neptunes, front man
for the band N.E.R.D and co-creator of the fashion lines Billionaire
Boys Club and Ice Cream — is known for his distinct personal style at
least as much as for his musical prowess, and said style extends to his
rides. Not only does he have a $455,000 Mercedes-Benz
SLR McLaren
with a supercharged 5.5L V8 engine parked in his
driveway, he also counts a $1 million, carbon-fiber, Formula 1-inspired
Ferrari
Enzo
(top speed: 221 mph) for his daily errands about town.

Lauren
Conrad
is a TV star from the MTV shows “Laguna Beach” and “The
Hills.” While you can easily say her roles lack, well, substance, you
cannot say the same for Conrad’s ride. It is full of it, in a good way.
She rides around Los Angeles in the incredible Audi
R8
supercar. The midmounted monster — which goes zero to 60 mph in
4.6 seconds, delivers 317 lb-ft of torque and has a top speed of 187
mph — is also favored by macho types such as English soccer ace Robbie
Fowler and actor David Hasselhoff. So, while seeing a tiny, blond,
SoCal reality TV star tooling around in this powerhouse is a bit
disconcerting, it’s also, dare we say it, totally awesome! It sure
beats Paris Hilton’s cringe-inducing pink
Bentley
.

While the Jonas Brothers’ music may appeal to the tween girl set,
the car Nick
Jonas
drives comes straight out of a ZZ Top video. As soon as he
turned 16, the Disney-produced guitar player and vocalist was spotted
cruising around his Toluca Lake, Calif., neighborhood in a shiny black
1968 Ford Mustang Cobra with white racing stripes. Although we doubt
the young crooner spent hours rehabilitating the classic muscle car
getting grease under those manicured nails, we have to give him credit
for one badass ride.

GMC Yukon Hybrid

For at least one nod to practicality on this list, we turn to “Walk
the Line” actress Reese
Witherspoon
and her vehicle of choice. Rather than the ever-popular
Toyota
Prius
favored by Hollywood’s eco warriors, or the MINI
Cooper
(a hit with “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart), this petite
thespian and mother drives to and fro in a massive GMC
Yukon Hybrid
. And while the SUV’s gas mileage is not exactly at
Prius levels (it gets about 21 mpg on the highway), it sports a monster
V8 engine and can tow up to 6,000 pounds. What a famous Hollywood
actress commanding $15 million to $20 million per picture needs with
that kind of power is unclear, but it’s pretty cool nonetheless.

While Fergie is probably the most recognized member of the Black
Eyed Peas, will.i.am
is definitely the most politically minded, as proven by his bizarre
“hologram” in a ratings stunt with CNN’s Anderson Cooper after the 2008
presidential election. Nonetheless, the musician puts his environmental
politics into action with his choice of car, the Tesla
Roadster
. Based on the super-sporty Lotus Elise, this pure
electric racer does zero to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. It develops 248
horsepower and gets 244 miles per charge. It’s so sporty, in fact, that
another famous musician and Tesla owner — Flea, bassist for the Red
Hot Chili Peppers — has said that it makes his Porsche feel “like a
golf cart.”

1959 Rolls-Royce Convertible

Normally, music superstar <a onclick=”window.open(this.href);return
false;” href=”http://music.msn.com/music/artist-photos/beyonc%c3%a9/”>Beyoncé
Knowles is spotted with the type of entourage that suggests she
doesn’t spend too much time actually driving herself anywhere. And
that’s a shame, considering that on her 25th birthday, her
then-boyfriend (now husband), rapper and music mogul Jay-Z, surprised
her with a 1959 Rolls-Royce
convertible. No definite details as to model — though as a convertible
it’s most likely a Silver Cloud. Regardless, it’s hard to argue with a
classic luxury automobile reported to be worth a cool million bucks as a
“congratulations for being one year older” gift.

Bugatti Veyron

Who knew being obnoxious on overhyped network TV contests was so
lucrative? One look at the Bugatti Veyron that “American Idol” judge Simon
Cowell
ponied up $1.7 million for tells us everything we need to
know about the financial prospects of pomposity. With a top speed of
more than 253 mph, the Veyron holds the title of the fastest (and most
expensive) street-legal car on the road today. Consequently, Cowell can
sit in judgment of all other motorists around him, anywhere in the
world. Even more proof that nice guys finish last: Cowell purchased the
Bugatti within a few days of picking up a $434,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom
Drophead Coupe.

Noted black-on-black (aka “murdered out”) luxury vehicle enthusiast
and sometime-international soccer star David
Beckham
has been spotted driving around Los Angeles in a sleek,
blacked-out Rolls-Royce
Phantom Drophead Coupe
. The ride’s color scheme matches his
$400,000 customized Porsche
911
Cabriolet Turbo and jacked-up Jeep
Wrangler
, and rounds out the luxury lineup in his garage, which
also includes a Ferrari
F430
and a V10
Lamborghini Gallardo
. His wife, Victoria — aka Posh, former Spice
Girl turned Marc Jacobs muse and international fashion plate — plays
the ivory to Becks’ ebony in a white Porsche 911 Cabriolet.

GM EcoJet

Jay
Leno
isn’t your typical celebrity car owner. He is actually a true
automotive enthusiast extraordinaire. His collection of rare and odd
vintage rides is legendary. But, as a true gearhead, Leno is just as
impressed by speed and power as by quirk and collectability. Take his
EcoJet prototype, for instance. Leno helped design the one-of-a-kind
supercar (with help from his own Big Dog garage team and the design
gurus at General Motors). It is essentially a modified Corvette
Z06
that runs on biodiesel and is powered by a 650-horsepower
LT-101 jet engine, similar to the ones found in Coast Guard
helicopters. The team is still working out the kinks to get it on the
road, but in the meantime you can see (and hear) Leno and team firing
it up at his official
car Web site
.

1962 Ferrari 250 GTO

American fashion icon Ralph Lauren’s car collection has everything
from the ultraclassic (Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing Coupe) to the
iconic (Porsche 550 Spyder) to the bizarre (Jaguar XKD) — and those are
just some of his cars from 1955! It’s hard to choose favorites among
such a select stable, but if we could abscond with one of his
incredible rides, chances are it would be the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO.
Only 39 of these unmistakable Italian beauties were produced between
1962 and 1964, and they are widely considered to be one of Enzo
Ferrari’s greatest achievements — if not the greatest. And they’re
priced accordingly: 250 GTOs (top speed: 170 mph) have sold at auctions
over the years for anywhere from $2 million to more than $15 million.

World’s Most Expensive Car – Citroen

The GT by Citroën (sometimes spelled GTbyCitroën) is a sports car
that debuted as a concept car on October 2 at the 2008 Paris Motor Show.
The car is a collaboration between the French automaker Citroën and the
Japanese racing simulation developer Polyphony Digital. An extremely
limited edition, only 6
are to be built.

World’s Most Expensive Car –

Polyphony Digital’s Citroën GT is set to become one of the most
expensive “production
(if you can really call it that…) sold today, coming in at £1.1
million pounds or approximately $1.8 million U.S. dollars. AutoCar got
the scoop from “senior inside sources”, who revealed that only six of
the will be
made — all of which will be powered by either a “Ford or GM V8?. That’s
considerably less than the 20 production models that were hinted at
before, but according to AutoCar, “most of the concept’s features should
make the final production version, including the carbon-fibre
construction and eccentric interior details such as the copper trim.”
Sweet! The final production version of the car is expected to be
launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.

Terrafugia Transition: The NEW Flying Car

Terrafugia Transition

fly-web.jpgHowever, if you’re looking to navigate the urban jungle, you might want to consider The Transition from Terrafugia out of Woburn, Massachusetts. The Transition, designed by a team of MIT-trained engineers, is a roadable aircraft featuring motorized wings that fold out in about 30 seconds. When on the road, the wings fold up so close to the body that you can fit the vehicle inside a standard, single-car garage. Yet it’s still roomy enough for two people and their luggage, including such luxuries as skiing equipment or golf clubs.

To get airborne, the Transition uses a large rear propeller that will send the vehicle through the sky at 115MPH for a range of 460 miles. Best of all, it uses standard unleaded gasoline and gets a respectable 30MPG on the road.

Much like the Parajet SkyCar, this isn’t just the pipe dream of an ambitious inventor – as you can see in the video below, the Transition made its first runway test flight on March 5, 2009, with more extensive flights to follow soon.

via [YouTube]

Unlike other roadable aircrafts, if you want your own Transition, you can actually order one right now with a $10,000 down payment. The final purchase price will be in the neighborhood of $194,000 and the first owners should be able to take flight in 2011.

It’s hard to say if we’ll all one day fly to work or to pick up the kids from soccer practice. But if these modern designs are any indication, the long-held dream of a flying car in every garage might just become a reality.
