Round-Up: Lofted Kitchens

The kitchen. It’s made a big comeback in recent years. This is especially true for kitchens with open layouts that lend themselves to a more communal dining experience. According to Adilin Darling Design, an architecture firm based in San Francisco, when a kitchen has an open layout, it becomes a “stage” within which the most average of cooks can shine. In that vein, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite open kitchens that we’ve found inspiring for your enjoyment this Friday.

Aqua Jewels by Marcel Wanders

squlavabo01.jpg

Live from Milan: Dutch designer Marcel Wanders has designed a range of bathroom fittings called Aqua Jewels for Italian manufaturers Bonomi.

Here’s some text from Bonomi:

In the palace of your dreams, where the bathroom is your sanctuary. The warm moist air bathes your skin and “Aqua Jewels” by Marcel Wanders for Bonomi are your servants. The elements lay before you on a stage awaiting your command. The fragmented surfaces are tamed by reflections of light, anticipating your liquid rituals. The water cascades through the “Aqua Jewels” and uses your naked skin as its canvas, dusting you with dazzling droplets of liquid. A magical transformation begins and time stands still.’

Marcel Wanders grew up in Boxtel, the Netherlands, and graduated cum laude from the School of the Arts Arnhem in 1988. Marcel Wanders’ fame started with his iconic Knotted Chair, which he produced for Droog Design in 1996. He is now ubiquitous, designing for the biggest European contemporary design manufacturers. Founded in 2000, Moooi has grown into an internationally renowned design label. Additionally, Marcel Wanders works on architectural and interior design projects and recently turned his attention to consumer home appliances.

Marcel was the editor of the International Design Yearbook 2005. He was a juror for various prizes like the Rotterdam Design Prize (for which his own products were nominated several times) and the Kho Liang Ie prize. He lectured at SFMoMA, Limn, the Design Academy, Nike, IDFA, FutureDesignDays and has taught at various design academies in the Netherlands and abroad. Various designs of Marcel Wandershave been selected for the most important design collections and exhibitions in the world, like the Museum of Modern Art in New York and San Francisco, the V&A Museum in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans vanBeuningen in Rotterdam, the Central Museum in Utrecht, Museum of Decorative Arts Copenhagen and various Droog Design exhibitions.

Bonomi, the name of the family still leading the company, is an Italian brand uniting solid artisan traditions and the ability to produce top quality bathroom taps and fittings of essential and refined design.

The company’s history covers a century of successive generations leaving in heritage the ambition to constantly improve performance through continuous, patient and transversal research, rigorous quality control to comply with the evolution of technology, and untiring daily efforts fired by sobriety.

Starting before the new millennium, Bonomi has been investing in avant-garde design, giving rise to the development project for a special range of taps which immediately marked an important threshold: in fact, Bonomi was the first company to propose the “flat spout” – an interpretation that is greatly acclaimed now as a paradigm of designer taps.

The project is now consolidated under the brand name of Bonomi Contemporaneo Italiano.

Camitz Sparkling Vodka

I’ve tried the O2 sparkling vodka but I’m intrigued by the new Camitz vodka because it’s topped with a champagne stopper (the O2 has a screwcap and was only mildy fizzy). The Camitz Vodka comes from Sweden and is made from water from the underground springs of Töllsjo and grains from the fields of Västergötland near the distillery. The vodka is distilled five times before carbonation.I haven’t tried it yet but The Strong Buzz reports that it delivers a satisfying pop when opened and has a nice fizz with a bit of acidity and needs to be chilled before serving. It sells for $45 and will soon be appearing in key markets in New York, Florida, Nevada and California.
